Axel's take: 8.3/10

Strong service and rooftop views outweigh a less appealing immediate neighborhood. a comfortable 4-star city hotel near Omonia, scored for what it is.

Meliá Athens is a comfortable 4-star city hotel near Omonia, and a strong pick if you value helpful staff and a rooftop pool over a postcard-pretty address. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise cleanliness, comfortable beds and welcoming reception staff. The rooftop’s Acropolis views are the standout, while nearby metro access makes this a practical sightseeing base. We'd choose it for dependable comfort rather than cutting-edge design.

The trade-off is the setting: several guests find the immediate streets run-down, and the historic center takes a longer walk than the hotel's central billing might suggest. Breakfast attracts both praise and complaints about crowding and variety. The rooftop pool is seasonal—the hotel advertises mid-May to mid-October opening, weather permitting. We'd skip it if charming evening strolls or a year-round pool are priorities.

• Best for: couples on sightseeing breaks; travelers who prioritize helpful service; summer visitors wanting a rooftop pool

• Watch out for: run-down immediate surroundings; seasonal rooftop pool; mixed breakfast feedback

• Location: Near Omonia metro and the Archaeological Museum; less atmospheric than the historic center.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and marble bathrooms; decor is more traditional than contemporary.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent Tripadvisor, Expedia and Booking.com feedback.

• Service: Reception staff repeatedly earn praise for warm welcomes and practical assistance.

• Amenities: Seasonal outdoor rooftop pool, rooftop dining, gym, sauna and hammam; no confirmed indoor pool.

• Fees and surprises: A seasonal accommodation tax is collected locally; breakfast may cost extra, and nearby parking is paid.
