#7 of 9 hotels in Plaka & Syntagma by Axel's take. Plaka & Syntagma is #2 of 9 places to stay in Athens. The best hotels in Plaka & Syntagma, ranked · Where to stay in Athens

Axel's take: 8.8/10

A strong choice for classic Athens luxury, but current wellness closures matter. a historic five-star grand hotel on Syntagma Square, scored for what it is.

Grande Bretagne is a historic five-star grand hotel on Syntagma Square, and a strong pick for travelers who want traditional luxury in a central location. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise attentive staff, immaculate rooms and breakfast overlooking the Acropolis. We'd choose it for the service, rooftop dining and easy access to central Athens rather than contemporary design.

The main compromise right now is substantial: Marriott confirms that GB Spa, the indoor pool and the main fitness studio are closed for renovation, with temporary treatment rooms and exercise facilities instead. Expedia lists closures through October 31, 2026, subject to change; confirm reopening directly. Some guests also mention compact rooms and aging carpets, although overall feedback remains excellent. We'd skip it for a wellness-focused stay or if sleek, spacious rooms matter more than historic atmosphere.

  • Best for: travelers who enjoy traditional luxury; first-time Athens sightseeing; couples who prioritize rooftop dining

  • Watch out for: spa, indoor pool and main gym renovation closures; some compact rooms and older finishes; reopening dates subject to change

  • Location: On Syntagma Square beside the metro, with Plaka and central sights within walking distance.

  • Rooms: Traditional, comfortable interiors; some rooms are compact, and Acropolis views require the right category.

  • Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent guest reviews and major booking-site category ratings.

  • Service: Recent guests repeatedly praise warm, attentive staff, particularly at breakfast and the rooftop restaurant.

  • Amenities: Rooftop dining and a seasonal outdoor pool; GB Spa, indoor pool and main fitness studio currently closed.

  • Fees and surprises: Breakfast may cost extra depending on the booking; parking is charged, and renovation reopening needs confirmation.
