Axel's take: 8.0/10

A dependable Athens base, stronger on service than five-star polish. a five-star business hotel with traditional rooms and a small rooftop pool, scored for what it is.

Crowne Plaza Athens is a five-star business hotel we'd choose for helpful staff and dependable comfort rather than luxury flair. Recent Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the service, clean rooms and generous breakfast; families also appreciate rooms with two double beds. Megaro Moussikis metro is a short walk away, making this a practical base if you're happy using public transport rather than staying beside the ancient sights.

The compromises are worth knowing: several recent guests describe dated bedrooms and bathrooms, and the rooftop pool is genuinely tiny—a cooling-off spot, not somewhere for proper swimming. It also operates seasonally. Breakfast and parking aren't automatically included. It's a strong pick for business trips and family city breaks, but we'd skip it for contemporary five-star interiors, a substantial pool or Plaka on the doorstep.

• Best for: business travelers; families wanting two double beds; sightseers comfortable using the metro

• Watch out for: dated room and bathroom decor; tiny, seasonal rooftop pool; outside the main historic sightseeing core

• Location: A short walk to Megaro Moussikis metro; less convenient for exploring Plaka entirely on foot.

• Rooms: Generally comfortable, with useful family configurations, but recurring comments about dated interiors.

• Cleanliness: Broadly strong recent feedback across Booking.com and Expedia, despite occasional exceptions.

• Service: Helpful, friendly staff are the most consistent strength across recent guest reviews.

• Amenities: Small seasonal outdoor rooftop pool, a 24-hour gym, two restaurants and free Wi-Fi; no indoor pool listed by IHG.

• Fees and surprises: Parking costs extra; check whether breakfast is included and confirm seasonal pool availability.
