#6 of 9 hotels in Koukaki & Makrygianni by Axel's take. Koukaki & Makrygianni is #3 of 9 places to stay in Athens. The best hotels in Koukaki & Makrygianni, ranked · Where to stay in Athens

Axel's take: 8.5/10

Excellent beds and sightseeing access, but the closed rooftop is a real loss. a design-led 5-star city hotel beside the Acropolis Museum, scored for what it is.

COCO-MAT Athens BC is a design-led 5-star city hotel beside the Acropolis Museum, and a strong pick for sightseeing rather than resort-style lounging. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the comfortable beds, helpful staff, cleanliness and generous breakfast. We'd choose it for a walkable Athens break where good sleep and welcoming service matter more than extensive facilities.

The big catch is that the rooftop pool, restaurant and bar remain closed following a planning dispute; ignore older rooftop photos when deciding. A lobby restaurant, gym, sauna and hammam still provide useful extras. Rooms can feel compact for the luxury billing, and some have open bathroom layouts with limited shower privacy. We'd skip it if a pool, rooftop evenings or a spacious, traditionally private room is central to your trip.

  • Best for: first-time Athens sightseers; couples prioritizing comfortable beds; car-free city breaks

  • Watch out for: rooftop pool, restaurant and bar closed; compact rooms in some categories; limited shower privacy in some layouts

  • Location: Beside the Acropolis Museum, with Plaka, major sights and restaurants within easy walking distance.

  • Rooms: Beds earn consistent praise; check room size, bathroom layout and the specific view before booking.

  • Cleanliness: Strong overall feedback across recent reviews, with no dominant recurring cleanliness problem.

  • Service: Friendly, helpful staff are one of the most consistently praised features.

  • Amenities: Lobby restaurant, gym and spa remain available; complimentary sauna and hammam require appointments.

  • Fees and surprises: Seasonal accommodation tax is collected at the property; check breakfast inclusion and do not expect rooftop access.
