Axel's take: 8.3/10

A personable Eagle Beach base, with excellent housekeeping but a recurring odor risk. a low-rise 4-star boutique resort across from Eagle Beach, scored for what it is.

Amsterdam Manor is a low-rise 4-star boutique resort across the road from Eagle Beach, better suited to relaxed beach days than big-resort entertainment. It's a strong pick for couples and families who want kitchen-equipped accommodation and personal service. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the cleanliness, welcoming staff and beach access; the hotel also reports completing a renovation of guestrooms and shared facilities.

The important catch is recurring sewage odor associated with the nearby wastewater plant. Recent accounts vary from barely noticing it to finding it disruptive around the property and beach, so this is a genuine risk rather than a guaranteed problem. The pool is modest, there's no on-site gym, and reaching the sand means crossing the road. We'd skip it if you're smell-sensitive or want extensive resort facilities; otherwise, its comfort and consistently praised staff make a persuasive case.

• Best for: couples seeking a quieter beach base; families wanting kitchen facilities; travelers who prefer small resorts

• Watch out for: intermittent sewage odor around the resort and beach; road crossing to Eagle Beach; modest pool and no on-site gym

• Location: Across the road from Eagle Beach, with nearby restaurants and a convenient bus stop.

• Rooms: Renovated studios and suites offer kitchens or kitchenettes; equipment and views vary by category.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Tripadvisor and Expedia, with repeated praise for rooms and grounds.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff are a recurring highlight, particularly reception and restaurant teams.

• Amenities: Outdoor and children's pools, beach loungers, Passions on the Beach and Horizons Lounge; no on-site gym.

• Fees and surprises: Parking is free; breakfast can cost extra, and pets incur charges; Expedia lists no elevator.
