Axel's take: 8.6/10

Strong on character and location, but choose your room carefully. A historic, design-led 4-star boutique hotel near the French Quarter, scored for what it is.

The Eliza Jane is a historic 4-star boutique hotel in converted warehouses, now part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection rather than Hyatt. It’s a strong pick for New Orleans character without sleeping in the French Quarter’s busiest streets. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the distinctive interiors, comfortable beds and welcoming staff; cleanliness also scores strongly. The courtyard and Press Room lounge give you appealing places to unwind between outings.

The main compromise is the room itself: layouts vary, interior-facing options need careful checking, and dim lighting is a recurring complaint across sites. Service earns considerably more praise than criticism, though some guests describe uneven problem handling. A daily destination fee and paid valet also weaken the value. We’d choose it for a couples’ city break, but skip it if bright rooms and predictable layouts matter more than atmosphere.

• Best for: Couples on a city break; Travelers who appreciate historic design; Sightseers exploring on foot

• Watch out for: Dim lighting and variable room layouts; Interior-facing room options; Daily destination fee and paid valet

• Location: Central Business District setting, two blocks from the French Quarter and convenient for walking to sights.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and distinctive decor; check room dimensions and outlook before booking.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall ratings across Expedia, Booking.com and Tripadvisor outweigh scattered complaints.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff are a consistent strength, with occasional shortcomings in resolving problems.

• Amenities: Couvant restaurant, Press Room lounge, courtyard and a 24-hour gym with a Peloton.

• Fees and surprises: Daily destination amenity fee, paid valet and additional pet fees; confirm which benefits your booking includes.
