Axel's take: 8.9/10

A strong Leblon choice for understated luxury, with boutique-sized facilities. a design-led five-star boutique hotel opposite Leblon Beach, scored for what it is.

JANEIRO is a 51-room, five-star boutique hotel opposite Leblon Beach, and a strong pick for travelers who prefer understated design to grand-hotel formality. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise cleanliness, comfortable rooms and welcoming staff; recent reviews reinforce the appeal of the ocean views and beachfront location. We'd choose it for a beach-and-city break rather than a resort-style stay.

The trade-offs are mostly about scale and expectations. The rooftop pool area is small, gym access is at nearby Bodytech, and some Tripadvisor and Expedia guests report slow food or drink delivery despite otherwise positive service experiences. Beach service is useful, but this is a public beach across the road, not private hotel sand. We'd skip it if extensive facilities or consistently brisk service are essential; Expedia also lists a minimum guest age of ten.

  • Best for: couples seeking understated luxury; design-minded beach travelers; travelers exploring Leblon

  • Watch out for: small rooftop pool area; occasional slow food and drink service; children under ten not permitted

  • Location: Across the road from Leblon Beach, with restaurants and Antero de Quental metro nearby.

  • Rooms: Comfortable, restrained interiors; entry categories have partial rather than full ocean views.

  • Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com, Tripadvisor and recent Expedia reviews.

  • Service: Warm, accommodating staff are widely praised; food and drink delivery can be slower.

  • Amenities: Rooftop pool, beach service, bikes and Mini Spa; gym access is off-site at Bodytech.

  • Fees and surprises: Confirm breakfast inclusion; Expedia lists extra charges for breakfast, valet parking and pets.
