Axel's take: 8.9/10

Polished service and excellent dining, with a hillside location and extras to budget for. a traditional 5-star luxury hotel on Namsan’s slopes, scored for what it is.

The Shilla Seoul is a traditional 5-star luxury hotel that makes its strongest case through service, dining and meticulous upkeep. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise attentive staff, spotless rooms and comfortable beds, while the breakfast and well-equipped gym earn particular enthusiasm. It’s a strong pick if you want the hotel itself to be a substantial part of your Seoul trip, rather than simply somewhere to sleep.

The hillside setting is the main compromise: getting out to explore takes more effort than at a hotel amid the shopping streets. Check inclusions carefully, too. Urban Island outdoor-pool admission costs extra unless included, and the indoor sauna is also a paid facility. The gym, indoor pool and sauna close every third Wednesday. We’d skip it if walk-out sightseeing or an all-inclusive luxury experience matters most.

• Best for: couples planning a hotel-focused break; travelers who prioritize attentive service; food and fitness enthusiasts

• Watch out for: hillside access complicates sightseeing on foot; outdoor pool and sauna may cost extra; monthly gym, indoor-pool and sauna closure

• Location: Quiet hillside setting near Namsan; less convenient for spontaneous sightseeing on foot.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and well-maintained rooms draw consistent praise.

• Cleanliness: A clear strength across Tripadvisor and Expedia, including recent housekeeping feedback.

• Service: Attentive staff and helpful concierge service are recurring highlights.

• Amenities: Strong dining, substantial gym, indoor pool and seasonal Urban Island outdoor pool.

• Fees and surprises: Check pool, sauna and breakfast inclusions; gym, indoor pool and sauna close every third Wednesday.
