Axel's take: 7.7/10

A good downtown budget base, provided you prize location over polish. a no-frills downtown hotel in a historic building, scored for what it is.

The Architect is a no-frills downtown hotel in a historic building, and we'd pick it for sightseeing rather than spending much time indoors. The White House is nearby, and McPherson Square Metro is about five minutes away. Booking.com and recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and helpful staff. For travelers who want the essentials in a central location, it's good value.

The compromises are compact, dated rooms and a short amenities list. Expect complimentary lobby coffee and tea rather than a full-service hotel experience, and don't assume every room includes a refrigerator. Drivers must arrange off-site parking. Expedia also lists a security deposit and credit-card surcharge, worth confirming before booking. We'd skip it if spacious rooms, modern finishes or extensive facilities matter more than walkability.

• Best for: budget-minded sightseers; car-free city breaks; short downtown stays

• Watch out for: compact, dated rooms; no on-site parking; deposit and credit-card surcharge

• Location: Central downtown base near the White House, roughly five minutes from McPherson Square Metro.

• Rooms: Simple and sometimes small; beds earn praise, but refrigerator availability varies by room type.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com ratings and recent Expedia guest feedback.

• Service: Generally friendly and helpful in stay reviews; Tripadvisor includes complaints about reservation-change communication.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, lobby coffee and tea, daily housekeeping, luggage storage and a 24-hour desk.

• Fees and surprises: Expedia lists a security deposit and credit-card surcharge; parking must be arranged separately.
