Axel's take: 8.5/10

Lombardy delivers warm service and historic character, with some old-building compromises. a historic 4-star boutique hotel in downtown Washington, scored for what it is.

Hotel Lombardy is a historic 4-star boutique hotel that makes a strong case for choosing character over contemporary polish. Its downtown location suits sightseeing and George Washington University visits, with Metro access nearby. Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise helpful staff, clean rooms and comfortable beds. The café and Venetian Room bar add appeal beyond simply having somewhere to sleep.

The trade-off is an old-fashioned interior that some guests find charming and others find tired. Room layouts vary, and some guests report small bathrooms and noise between rooms or floors. September 2026 reviews also report noisy construction across the street; ask whether it still affects your room before booking. Valet parking costs extra. We'd choose it for personable service and location, but skip it if modern finishes or dependable quiet are priorities.

• Best for: travelers who enjoy historic hotels; George Washington University visitors; car-free sightseeing trips

• Watch out for: recently reported construction across the street; variable room layouts and sound insulation; paid valet parking

• Location: Walkable downtown base near GWU, restaurants and Foggy Bottom–GWU Metro.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and traditional furnishings; layouts, bathroom space and noise levels vary.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent reviews and major booking-site ratings.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff are the most consistently praised feature.

• Amenities: Café Lombardy, Venetian Room bar, fitness center and complimentary Wi-Fi.

• Fees and surprises: Valet parking is extra and excludes oversized vehicles; confirm nearby construction conditions.
