Axel's take: 7.4/10

Pick it for French Quarter access, not polished four-star surroundings. a large, older 4-star at Canal and Bourbon, scored for what it is.

The Astor is a large, older 4-star whose strongest selling point is its position at Canal and Bourbon. It’s a good pick for travelers who want restaurants, nightlife and streetcars close by. Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the location, friendly staff and clean, comfortable rooms; recent Expedia reviews remain notably positive about those basics. The outdoor pool, gym and lobby-level Bourbon House add useful conveniences.

The trade-off is inconsistent polish. Tripadvisor reviews describe dated furnishings, maintenance shortcomings and noise, while Hotels.com guests also acknowledge the property's age. Those complaints don't define every stay, but they temper expectations of a four-star hotel. Hotel parking is paid valet only. We'd choose it for an activity-filled city break and skip it for a quiet retreat or reliably fresh interiors.

• Best for: Bourbon Street nightlife trips; car-free French Quarter sightseeing; travelers prioritizing location over polish

• Watch out for: street noise in some rooms; dated interiors and uneven maintenance; paid valet-only hotel parking

• Location: At Canal and Bourbon, with French Quarter sights and streetcars readily accessible.

• Rooms: Comfort and space earn praise, but dated furnishings, maintenance and noise receive recurring criticism.

• Cleanliness: Generally positive across booking sites, though some recent Tripadvisor guests report significant lapses.

• Service: Friendly front-desk and valet teams are recurring strengths; some guests report uneven problem handling.

• Amenities: Outdoor pool, fitness center, free Wi-Fi and Dickie Brennan’s Bourbon House.

• Fees and surprises: Paid valet-only hotel parking; early check-in and late checkout may incur extra charges.
