Axel's take: 9.2/10

Exceptional service and leafy grounds make this a standout city luxury hotel. a garden-set 5-star luxury hotel on MG Road, scored for what it is.

The Oberoi is a garden-set 5-star on MG Road, and we'd choose it for attentive service rather than oversized rooms or showy design. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise thoughtful staff, meticulous housekeeping and excellent breakfasts; Booking.com's strong overall ratings reinforce that picture. Private balconies overlooking greenery give it a distinctive advantage for a central business hotel, while the pool, spa and restaurants make staying in appealing.

The main compromise is space: several room categories have just 28 square metres indoors, so upgrade if you like to spread out. Crucially, the hotel says The Polo Club bar is currently undergoing renovation, with its menu served at Lapis instead. We'd skip it if a dedicated cocktail bar or a sprawling entry-level room is essential; otherwise, it's an unusually convincing luxury choice.

• Best for: business travelers based around MG Road; couples seeking a leafy city break; travelers who prioritize personal service

• Watch out for: The Polo Club bar is undergoing renovation; Several room categories have compact interiors

• Location: Central MG Road setting, with Trinity metro station a short walk away.

• Rooms: Private garden-facing balconies; Deluxe, Luxury and Executive rooms list 28-square-metre interiors.

• Cleanliness: Consistently strong housekeeping praise across recent Tripadvisor and Expedia reviews.

• Service: Personal attention is the clearest recurring strength, supported by high guest scores.

• Amenities: Temperature-controlled outdoor pool, spa, 24-hour gym and three restaurants.

• Fees and surprises: Parking and Wi-Fi are complimentary; airport transfers cost extra, and The Polo Club is under renovation.
