Axel's take: 8.3/10

A friendly, good-value base for exploring, with compact rooms and a late-night bar. a simple, budget-friendly boutique hotel in a former hostel on St. Charles Avenue, scored for what it is.

The Quisby is a simple, budget-friendly boutique hotel with a former hostel’s social spirit. The hotel says it switched to all-private rooms in 2024, with private bathrooms and some bunk-bed options still available. It’s a strong pick for travelers who prioritize exploring over hotel comforts: the St. Charles streetcar stops outside, and Expedia and Booking.com guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff, cleanliness and convenient location. Basic breakfast adds value, though guest opinions on its quality vary.

The compromises are space and quiet. Recent guests describe compact rooms and occasionally awkward layouts, while some Tripadvisor guests report sound carrying between rooms. The downstairs Quartz Bar stays open especially late on weekends, so light sleepers should think twice. There’s no on-site parking, and Expedia lists a destination fee and deposit. We’d choose it for a sociable city break, not a spacious, full-service retreat.

• Best for: budget-minded solo travelers and couples; car-free sightseeing; travelers who enjoy a social lobby bar

• Watch out for: compact rooms and possible noise; no on-site parking; destination fee and deposit

• Location: St. Charles streetcar outside; convenient for the WWII Museum and trips toward the French Quarter.

• Rooms: All private with en-suite bathrooms; queen, king and bunk options, but some layouts feel cramped.

• Cleanliness: Generally well reviewed across sites, including recent Expedia stays; not uniformly flawless.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are one of the most consistent positives; housekeeping is by request.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, basic breakfast and Quartz Bar; confirm accessibility because elevator information conflicts.

• Fees and surprises: Expedia lists a destination fee and deposit; the hotel excludes residents living within 60 miles.
