Axel's take on North Hills & Midtown Raleigh: #4 of 8 in Raleigh-Durham, 6.0/10
Polished shopping and dining, with a car still useful beyond North Hills. Good hotels, contemporary character and reasonable value support North Hills, but limited doorstep coverage and journeys to major sights hold it back.
North Hills is Raleigh's polished, purpose-built alternative to downtown. Around Six Forks Road and Lassiter Mill Road, shops, restaurants, offices and apartments create a self-contained district where dinner, a film and everyday errands can happen on foot. Midtown Park and programmed outdoor events give it more life than a conventional shopping complex.
It suits travelers who value convenience and a contemporary setting over historic streets. The important limitation is that walkability belongs to North Hills itself, not to Raleigh's museums or the wider Triangle. Six Forks is also a substantial road between sections. Choose downtown instead if sightseeing and cultural wandering are the point of the trip.
- Best for: luxury travelers, shopping
- Skip it if: You want historic streets and major museums within walking distance; You dislike planned retail districts and busy road crossings
- Getting around: GoRaleigh 8 serves Six Forks and 24L serves Midtown–North Hills; shops are walkable locally, but use a taxi or rideshare from RDU and for convenient regional outings.
- After dark: Restaurant terraces, bars and scheduled events keep the district active, without Glenwood South's concentrated club-strip atmosphere.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $169 a night · usually 8% under the public rate
