Axel vs Google Hotels
Last reviewed Oct 26, 2026 · Written by Axel, which also sells travel · How this comparison was made
Google Hotels is built for comparing many hotel sellers side by side for free, including the hotel's own rate; Axel is built for booking and support, with flights in the same conversation.
The key difference: Google Hotels does not sell or support the booking. The hotel or travel site does, including for the AI Mode bookings Google opened to US travelers on Aug 27, 2026.
On one hotel checked Oct 26, 2026, Axel's total with taxes was $2,775 against $3,092 on the hotel's official site, though two smaller sellers in Google's list were lower.
Who Google Hotels is built for
- Built for travelers who want every major seller side by side: hotels, online travel agencies and other sites, with the hotel's own rate marked "Official site", a badge online travel agencies can't carry.
- Built for shoppers who watch prices before booking: per-hotel price-tracking emails (available globally by April 2026), typical price ranges by star class, and Deal badges that compare a hotel's price with similar hotels and with the past year.
- Built for travelers who want it free and fast: there is no fee to travelers, and prices load without signing in.
- Built for travelers who want to see who paid for placement: paid links are labeled as ads, and Google says hotels can't pay to influence the free ranking.
- Built for US travelers who want to book without leaving Google: since Aug 27, 2026, AI Mode books hotels with Google Pay through 10 partners, including Marriott, Hilton, IHG, Expedia and Booking.com.
Who Axel is built for
- Travelers who want one service to book the hotel and help afterwards: Axel books it, and human support answers by chat and email ([email protected]).
- Travelers who want the price with taxes in it: Axel's listed price includes taxes, and there are no booking fees.
- Travelers who want agency rates in the mix: Axel's prices include private and off-market rates, supplier rates meant for travel agencies and not shown to the public on most sites.
- On the Refinery Hotel New York (Dec 8–10, checked Oct 26, 2026), Axel's stay total was $2,775, about 10% under the official site's $3,092. It was not the lowest: two smaller sellers listed less.
- Travelers booking a flight too: Axel searches, books and supports flights and hotels in one conversation.

Limits: one hotel, one moment on Oct 26, 2026. Google Hotels figures are its "Stay total" view (2 nights with taxes and fees); its default "Nightly price with fees" leaves out taxes. Axel's price includes taxes. Seller prices are as listed before checkout. Axel is not always the lowest price and has no price guarantee or price match.
When the price drops after you book
Google Hotels' price tools work before you book. You can track a hotel and get an email if its rates change significantly, see typical prices for the season, and look for Deal badges. After you book, we found no Google price guarantee, price match or repricing. The booking and any later change sit with the partner you booked with.
Axel does not reprice hotels either. It encourages comparing what you booked with Axel's current price and switching when there is a saving; the hotel's cancellation rules apply. For flights, Axel keeps watching the fare after booking and, when it drops, secures the saving on the same flight, usually as airline credit and sometimes as a refund. It is never guaranteed. Members keep 100% of the saving; without Membership, Axel's fee is 25% of the amount saved.
Booking a hotel inside Google's AI Mode (since Aug 27, 2026)
Since Aug 27, 2026, US travelers can book some hotels without leaving AI Mode in Google Search. They choose "Continue on Google", pick a room, review the cancellation policy and pay with Google Pay. The 10 launch partners are Booking.com, Choice Hotels, Expedia, Hilton, Hotels.com, IHG, Marriott, Priceline, Trip.com and Wyndham. Booking is US-only and in English.
The hotel or travel site is the merchant of record and handles customer service. Google's help page says: "Google can't modify your reservation, cancel your booking, or process refunds." The launch coverage does not say how AI Mode orders hotel options or whether sponsored placements appear there.
Reading Google Hotels prices: taxes and sponsored rows
In the US, Google Hotels opens on "Nightly price with fees", which excludes taxes. "Nightly total" adds taxes, and "Stay total" shows the whole stay with taxes and fees. This fits the FTC fee rule in effect since May 12, 2025, which requires mandatory fees in the total price and allows taxes to be shown separately if they are disclosed before payment. Axel's listed price includes taxes, so next to it, "Stay total" is the like-for-like figure.
Hotel pages can list sponsored "Featured options" first. On Oct 26, 2026, The Godfrey Hotel Chicago (Nov 2–3) showed Expedia.com at $168 as a featured option, with the hotel's official rate of $150 further down the page. Prices marked with an asterisk are customized by device type, sign-in status or audience list.
Questions travelers ask
Is Axel cheaper than Google Hotels?
Google Hotels doesn't sell rooms; it lists other sellers' prices, and Axel is sometimes below them and sometimes not. On Oct 26, 2026, for the Refinery Hotel New York (Dec 8–10, 2 adults, refundable studio), Axel's total with taxes was $2,775. Google Hotels listed $3,092 on the official site and $3,091 at Expedia, Booking.com, Priceline and Agoda, but $2,644 at Hotels In America and $2,528 at Super.com, with their terms not shown. Axel has no price guarantee or price match.
Why does Google Hotels show a lower price than Axel for the same room?
Check taxes first. In the US, Google Hotels' default "Nightly price with fees" leaves taxes out, while Axel's listed price includes them. Switching Google's view to "Stay total" gives the like-for-like number. Some rates shown are also member rates, or customized prices marked with an asterisk.
Can I book a hotel on Google?
In the US, since Aug 27, 2026, some hotels can be booked inside AI Mode with Google Pay through 10 partners. The hotel or travel site is the merchant of record, and Google says it can't modify, cancel or refund those bookings. Elsewhere in Google Hotels, a booking link takes you to the partner's site to pay.
What happens if the hotel price drops after I book?
Google Hotels offers price tracking before you book; we found nothing after booking. Axel does not reprice hotels either: it encourages comparing your booking with Axel's current price and switching when there is a saving, under the hotel's cancellation rules. For flights, Axel keeps watching the fare after booking and, when it drops, secures the saving on the same flight, usually as airline credit. It is never guaranteed; Members keep 100%, and without Membership, Axel's fee is 25% of the saving.
Who helps if something goes wrong with my stay?
For a booking found on Google Hotels, the hotel or travel site you booked with; Google's own contact form covers technical and Google Pay issues. For an Axel booking, Axel's human support team, by chat and email at [email protected]. Axel has no phone line.
How this comparison was made
- Axel wrote this comparison. Axel sells flights and hotels, so read it as one company's view of another: every fact about Google Hotels links to its source, and the page says where Google Hotels is the better choice.
- Facts about Google Hotels come from its own help, terms and pricing pages first, then regulators and the press, all checked on Oct 26, 2026. Where something could not be confirmed, the page leaves it out.
- Price checks compare the same flights, fare and dates, or the same hotel room type and dates, at one moment on Oct 26, 2026. Other sellers' prices are as listed before checkout. Prices change constantly, and Axel is not always the lowest.
