Axel vs Airbnb
Last reviewed Oct 26, 2026 · Written by Axel, which also sells travel · How this comparison was made
Airbnb is built for travelers who need a whole home, with space, a kitchen or room for a group; Axel is built for a hotel and a flight booked in one conversation. They sell different things: Airbnb lists homes from more than 5.5 million hosts and sells no flights, while Axel does not book homes or vacation rentals.
Who Airbnb is built for
- Built for groups and families who want one place together. In NerdWallet's comparison (2022 data, page updated Jun 5, 2026), a large Airbnb for six people cost about 33% less per person than three hotel rooms.
- Built for travelers who want a kitchen, more space or a home in a neighborhood, from more than 5.5 million hosts in over 220 countries and regions.
- Built for long stays: separate cancellation policies for stays of 28 nights or more, plus weekly and monthly discounts.
- Built for guests who want cover if a host lets them down: AirCover offers rebooking or a full or partial refund if the host cancels, you can't check in, or the listing is significantly different from the ad.
- Built for travelers who want to pay later: since Aug 14, 2025, US guests can pay $0 at booking on eligible domestic stays with Flexible or Moderate cancellation.
Who Axel is built for
- Hotel stays priced with taxes: Axel's listed price includes taxes, and there are no booking fees. On Airbnb, hosts can add a cleaning fee, and US search totals exclude taxes.
- A flight and a hotel in one conversation: Airbnb sells no flights, and Axel searches, books and supports both.
- Flight price drops after booking: Axel keeps watching the fare and, when it drops, secures the saving on the same flight, usually as airline credit. Members keep 100%; without Membership, Axel's fee is 25% of the saving. It is never guaranteed.
- Agency hotel rates: Axel's prices include private and off-market rates, supplier rates meant for travel agencies and not shown to the public on most sites. Axel does not always have the lowest price.
- One human support team for the flight and the hotel, by chat and email ([email protected]). There is no phone line.

No app. Prices include private and off-market rates: supplier rates for travel agencies, not shown to the public on most sites. | A marketplace for short-term stays, mainly whole homes and rooms from more than 5.5 million hosts. Since May 20, 2026 it also lists hand-picked boutique and independent hotels in 20 destinations, plus Experiences and Services. It sells no flights. |
| Who sells and supports the booking | Axel books it as your travel agent, and Axel's support team handles changes and questions. | The host provides the stay and sets the cancellation policy. Airbnb collects payment as the host's limited payment collection agent, holds it until check-in, and handles disputes under AirCover and its Rebooking and Refund Policy. |
| Fees | No booking fees; the price shown includes taxes. Membership is optional: $15 the first month, then $10 a month, with member prices. | Search has shown a total with fees since Apr 21, 2025. In the US that total excludes taxes, which appear before checkout. Hosts can add a cleaning fee. Some listings still add a guest service fee of 14.1% to 16.5% of the subtotal; listings on Airbnb's newer fee model show no separate guest service fee. |
| Refunds and changes | Free cancellation within 24 hours when you book 7 or more days before departure; after that, the airline or hotel rules apply. Axel never changes a booking without asking. | The host picks the policy: Flexible (full refund until 24 hours before check-in), Moderate (5 days), Limited (14 days), Firm (30 days), stricter invitation-only tiers, or Non-refundable. Free cancellation for 24 hours when booked 7 or more days before check-in, except some non-refundable hotel listings. |
| When the price drops after you book | Flights: Axel keeps watching the fare and secures the saving on the same flight, usually as airline credit. Members keep 100%; without Membership, Axel's fee is 25% of the saving. Never guaranteed. Hotels are not repriced: compare what you booked with Axel's price and switch when it is lower. | Homes: no price-drop feature published. Featured hotels: a price-match guarantee paid as Airbnb credit, claimed within 24 hours of booking, up to US$400. |
| Support | Human support by chat and email ([email protected]). No phone line. | Help Center and an AI assistant in chat, with handoff to a person by chat or phone. In Q2 2026, nearly 45% of issues that began with the AI assistant were resolved without a person. |
| Ratings | Trustpilot 4.2 from 64 reviews (Oct 26, 2026). | Trustpilot 1.2 from 18,534 reviews; App Store 4.8 from 703,135 ratings; BBB A+ (not accredited), with 7,765 complaints in the last 3 years (Oct 26, 2026). |
When the price drops after you book
Airbnb publishes no price-drop feature for homes. For featured hotels, it offers a price-match guarantee: if an eligible hotel is cheaper elsewhere, Airbnb pays the difference as credit, claimed within 24 hours of booking, up to US$400, excluding fees and taxes, and valid for 1 year. Through Dec 31, 2026, featured hotels also earn up to 15% credit toward a future Airbnb home, capped at US$2,000.
Axel does not reprice hotels. It encourages comparing what you booked with Axel's current price and switching when there is a saving. For flights, Axel keeps watching the fare after booking and, when it drops, secures the saving on the same flight, usually as airline credit and sometimes as a refund. It is never guaranteed. Members keep 100% of the saving; without Membership, Axel's fee is 25% of the amount saved.
A whole home or a hotel room
NerdWallet compared about 1,000 Airbnb entire-place reservations with about 1,000 hotel rooms (2022 data, page updated Jun 5, 2026). For six people, a large Airbnb cost about 33% less per person than three hotel rooms. For two people, a hotel room cost about 29% less. Results varied by city.
Airbnb's average daily rate was $184 in Q2 2026, up 5% from a year earlier. For stays, Axel books hotels only. For a group that wants one shared home with a kitchen, Airbnb is built for that trip and Axel is not.
Cancellation policies and AirCover
On Airbnb, each host chooses the cancellation policy for a home. Under Firm, the full refund ends 30 days before check-in, 50% is refunded between 7 and 30 days out, and the stay is not refunded inside 7 days. Any booking made at least 7 days before check-in can be cancelled free within 24 hours, except some non-refundable hotel listings.
AirCover for guests applies to homes. If the host cancels, you can't check in or reach the host, or the listing is significantly different from the ad, Airbnb offers rebooking or a full or partial refund, including service fees. Problems must be reported within 72 hours of discovery. Airbnb says AirCover is not an insurance policy, and it excludes travel issues such as delays.
After a host cancellation, Airbnb generally converts the payment to travel credit for rebooking. Guests can ask for a refund to the original payment method instead, and credit not used within 72 hours is refunded.

How this comparison was made
- Axel wrote this comparison. Axel sells flights and hotels, so read it as one company's view of another: every fact about Airbnb links to its source, and the page says where Airbnb is the better choice.
- Facts about Airbnb come from its own help, terms and pricing pages first, then regulators and the press, all checked on Oct 26, 2026. Where something could not be confirmed, the page leaves it out.
- Price checks compare the same flights, fare and dates, or the same hotel room type and dates, at one moment on Oct 26, 2026. Other sellers' prices are as listed before checkout. Prices change constantly, and Axel is not always the lowest.
