#2 of 9 hotels in Old Town & Niederdorf by Axel's take. Old Town & Niederdorf is #1 of 9 places to stay in Zurich. The best hotels in Old Town & Niederdorf, ranked · Where to stay in Zurich

Axel's take: 8.8/10

A strong Old Town base with thoughtful design and a few historic-building quirks. a historic 4-star boutique hotel in Zurich’s Old Town, scored for what it is.

Marktgasse is a historic 4-star boutique hotel that makes a strong case for staying in Zurich’s Old Town. Its 39 individually designed rooms pair an old building’s character with restrained contemporary furnishings. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise cleanliness, comfortable beds and helpful staff, while recent Trip.com reviews reinforce the location’s appeal. We’d choose it for a walkable city break, with restaurants, sights and the Rathaus tram close by. IGNIV and the more casual Delish add worthwhile dining options.

The trade-off is individuality rather than uniform four-star convenience: some rooms have low ceilings or sloping floors, and smaller categories warrant checking carefully. Recent Expedia guests note that coffee and water are communal rather than in-room. There’s no hotel parking, and some rooms require steps despite the elevator. Skip it if you need guaranteed step-free access without advance arrangements.

Best for: couples exploring Zurich on foot; design-minded city-break travelers; solo travelers comfortable with compact rooms
Watch out for: variable room sizes and historic layouts; steps to some rooms despite the elevator; no hotel parking
Location: Central Old Town setting, close to sights, restaurants and the Rathaus tram.
Rooms: Individually designed, air-conditioned rooms; some have low ceilings, sloping floors or compact layouts.
Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com, Expedia and Trip.com feedback.
Service: Recent reviews repeatedly praise friendly, helpful reception staff.
Amenities: IGNIV, Delish, a bar and communal refreshments; advertised fitness access is nearby, not an on-site gym.
Fees and surprises: Breakfast may cost extra; parking is off-site, and vehicle access is restricted.
