Where to stay in Quito: the 5 best neighborhoods, ranked
Updated October 22, 2026 · Ranked by Axel from research, its own hotel reviews and recent rates · How we rank
Stay in Old Town (Centro Histórico) for a first visit focused on Quito’s churches and squares, or for the strongest hotel value. Choose La Carolina for families and park-side convenience, La Floresta for food and relaxed evenings, and La Mariscal for nightlife—with specific venues planned rather than relying on Plaza Foch’s old reputation. In Old Town, plan dinner before streets quieten.
Quito’s main choice is between historic streets, modern park-side convenience and neighborhoods built around food or residential life, and Axel ranks them by weighing local character most heavily, alongside getting around, things within walking distance, hotel quality and choice, and how much quality your accommodation budget buys.

Sleep among Quito’s grandest churches, but plan your evenings.
Old Town takes first for strong hotels, outstanding value and historic sights on foot, though its evenings need more planning.

Stay here if Quito means churches, courtyards and streets worth exploring slowly. Around García Moreno, Sucre and Plaza Grande, the historic city is your daily surroundings rather than a separate excursion. San Francisco and La Compañía give the neighborhood its architectural weight, while traditional shops and daytime trading keep it from feeling like a museum.
The catch is evening flexibility: visitors report many businesses closing early and streets thinning out after the daytime crowds leave. Plan dinner or an organized evening outing rather than assuming you can wander late. Cobbles, narrow pavements and hills also complicate limited-mobility travel. Choose it for a culture-heavy visit; skip it for spontaneous nightlife.
Best for

Skip it if
You want spontaneous late-night dining and bar-hopping; Hills and uneven pavements are a problem
Getting around
Walk between the main historic sights; Metro Line 1 at San Francisco connects north and south. From UIO, take an airport taxi/transfer, or an airport bus to Quitumbe followed by the Metro.
After dark
Many streets quieten after shops close; Quito Tourism recommends guided, group or organized evening visits rather than aimless wandering.
Where to look
Plaza Grande and García Moreno. Start here for churches, museums and grand civic buildings within short walks; best for a sightseeing-heavy first visit.Junín, around Montúfar. Historic façades, small museums and artists’ workshops suit travelers who want neighborhood character alongside the major monuments.La Alameda Park. Choose the park edges for gardens and Metro access rather than doorstep churches; useful for sightseeing across the city.

The practical modern base for parks, business and easy Metro trips.
La Carolina pairs strong hotels with park-side character and Metro links, but weaker value and fewer nearby sights keep it second.

Choose La Carolina when you want Quito to work smoothly rather than surround you with historic architecture. Around República de El Salvador and Naciones Unidas, the setting is modern apartments, offices, restaurants and shopping. The park adds running routes, sports courts, family outings and the botanical garden—a useful counterweight to full sightseeing days.
This is our strongest choice for families, business travelers and visitors who want a park-centered routine. Metro stations at the northern and southern ends make historic Quito a straightforward outing, but it is not a neighborhood to choose for colonial atmosphere. Check the address carefully: the park is large, so convenience to your preferred station and dinner streets varies considerably.

You want historic architecture outside your door; You prefer intimate low-rise streets to a modern commercial district
Getting around
Metro Line 1 serves La Carolina at the park’s southwest and Iñaquito toward its north; restaurants and shopping are walkable on the appropriate side. From UIO, use an airport taxi or a bus to Río Coca followed by local transport.
After dark
Make restaurant streets, rather than the park, your evening destination; for late returns we would use door-to-door transport instead of park shortcuts.
Where to look
Naciones Unidas and Los Shyris. The park’s northern edge puts shopping and outdoor recreation together; useful for families who want easy daytime outings.República de El Salvador. Modern apartment blocks, offices and ground-floor cafés suit business stays and travelers who want dinner close to home.La Carolina Park, southern edge. Start near República and Eloy Alfaro for park routines and Carolina Metro access; practical for mixing modern Quito with sightseeing.

Useful for budget stays, less convincing than its nightlife reputation.

La Mariscal still has useful daytime ingredients: the craft market, Mindalae museum on Reina Victoria, cafés and a long-established traveler scene around Foch and Juan León Mera. It can work for sociable, budget-minded visitors who investigate their exact street rather than booking on the neighborhood name alone.
Do not rely on old descriptions of Plaza Foch as a guaranteed nightly party. Independent reporting in 2025 found empty premises and thin evening footfall, although individual venues remained busy. The city approved a recovery ordinance in February 2026, but that is not proof the revival is complete. We would choose La Floresta or La Carolina for an easier first stay.

Ecovía runs along 6 de Diciembre; Metro El Ejido is useful from the southern end, not doorstep rail for Plaza Foch. From UIO, use an airport taxi or a bus to Río Coca followed by Ecovía.
After dark
Activity varies sharply by venue and street; 2025 reporting found quiet stretches around Foch, so choose a destination and arrange the ride home.
Where to look
Orellana, Amazonas to Diego de Almagro. Stay here for a neighborhood you can enjoy between sightseeing trips. Independent cinema at Ocho y Medio, murals and cafés give the streets around Valladolid, Madrid and Vizcaya a creative identity without turning the whole place into a nightlife strip. Eating ranges from contemporary Ecuadorian cooking to traditional stalls around Parque Navarro, also known as Parque de las Tripas.
This is our best all-round choice for travelers who value dinner and neighborhood atmosphere as much as monuments. Recent visitors favor its local feel and walkable food scene. The compromise is transport: the Metro is not on your doorstep, and hills make longer walks less casual than they look. Skip it if you want to walk straight into the historic sights.

Cafés and restaurants are walkable; Ecovía on 6 de Diciembre requires a walk west, while Metro El Ejido is farther. From UIO, take an airport taxi/transfer or a bus to Río Coca, then Ecovía and a final walk.

Expect dinner, conversation and cinema rather than continuous clubbing; Quito Tourism recommends active streets near Ocho y Medio and a taxi or app ride back.

On Avenida González Suárez, apartment towers, bakeries and everyday services suit a quieter residential stay, with valley views where buildings face east. Below the mirador, Guápulo changes the mood: cobbled Camino de Orellana, cafés and the church feel more like a hillside village than the modern city above.
Do not treat the ridge and lower Guápulo as equally convenient bases. The descent is steep and the return is a substantial climb, not an effortless stroll after dinner. The Metro is not nearby, so wider sightseeing usually means road transport. Couples and longer-stay travelers may enjoy the separation; anyone with limited mobility or a packed first-visit schedule should choose elsewhere.

Walk the ridge’s everyday services; there is no nearby Metro, and lower Guápulo adds a steep climb. Use taxis for wider sightseeing and an airport taxi or arranged transfer from UIO.
After dark
Expect a quieter residential evening on the ridge and scattered café/bar activity in Guápulo rather than continuous nightlife; arrange the uphill ride back.
Where to look

Questions travelers ask
Is Old Town or La Carolina better for a first stay in Quito?
Old Town is our first choice for a first visit, with landmark churches, squares, strong hotels and the best hotel value. La Carolina is the practical alternative for park space, modern restaurants and Metro trips to the historic center. Choose Old Town for cultural surroundings; choose La Carolina if family routines and modern convenience matter more.
Where should families stay in Quito?
La Carolina is our top family base, thanks to the park, sports courts, botanical garden and strong hotel options. Check which side of the park puts you near your preferred restaurants and Metro station. Old Town comes second for historic sightseeing and hotel value, but its cobbles, narrow pavements and quieter evenings need more planning.
What is the cheapest good area to stay in Quito?
Old Town is the strongest choice for a good stay on a tighter budget: typical rates are below the city median, hotel quality scores well, and many historic sights are walkable. La Mariscal ranks second for budget trips, but its typical rates are not below the city median. Do not assume its backpacker reputation guarantees better value.
Where should I stay without a car, and how do I get there from Quito airport?
La Mariscal ranks first without a car for walkable daily choices and Ecovía access; Old Town follows for historic sights on foot and San Francisco Metro. There is no direct airport rail. From UIO, take a taxi or transfer, or use an airport bus to Río Coca for onward local transport, or Quitumbe for the Metro.
Is La Mariscal still a good base for nightlife?
Yes—La Mariscal remains our first nightlife pick, but book for specific venues, not the assumption that Plaza Foch stays busy every night. Independent reporting in 2025 found empty premises and quiet stretches alongside active venues. The recovery ordinance is not proof of a complete revival. La Floresta is runner-up for dinner, conversation and cinema.
Where should I stay for a business trip or convention in Quito?
La Carolina is our leading business base, with offices, strong hotels, restaurant streets and useful Metro connections. La Mariscal is runner-up for hotels and transport. For conventions, confirm the venue’s exact address and your route before choosing accommodation; the best general business neighborhood is not necessarily the most convenient address for a particular event.
Can I easily walk between González Suárez and Guápulo?
Not as an effortless round trip: lower Guápulo sits below the ridge, and the return is a substantial climb on steep terrain. Check whether your accommodation is on Avenida González Suárez or down near Camino de Orellana. If you head downhill for cafés or dinner, arrange an uphill ride back rather than assuming the walk will be easy.
