Axel's take: 8.8/10

A strong luxury pick for skyline views, with a few design-over-practicality compromises. a contemporary 5-star design hotel beside Vienna’s Danube Canal, scored for what it is.

SO/ Vienna is a contemporary 5-star design hotel that makes a strong case for choosing modern Vienna over palace-style luxury. Its canal-side location puts the old town and Schwedenplatz transport within easy reach. Expedia and Trip.com guests repeatedly praise spacious, clean rooms, helpful staff and city views; Booking.com’s strong comfort and cleanliness scores reinforce that picture. The panoramic Das LOFT restaurant and bar reopened on September 15, 2026, following its summer refurbishment.

The main compromise is practicality: recent guests on both Expedia and Trip.com mention dim room lighting, while several Trip.com reviews flag awkward showers and splash-prone bathroom fittings. Breakfast and parking can add to the bill, so check what your booking includes. It’s a strong pick for design-minded couples and city breaks; we’d skip it if traditional decor and straightforward room layouts matter more than the outlook.

• Best for: design-minded couples; city breaks with skyline views; sightseeing with easy transit access

• Watch out for: dim room lighting; awkward shower and bathroom fittings; breakfast and parking may cost extra

• Location: Beside the Danube Canal, near Schwedenplatz and within walking distance of the old town.

• Rooms: Spacious minimalist rooms with strong views; lighting and bathroom practicality draw some criticism.

• Cleanliness: Consistently strong feedback, backed by high cleanliness ratings on Booking.com and Expedia.

• Service: Recent guests repeatedly praise welcoming reception staff and helpful concierge service.

• Amenities: Das LOFT rooftop dining, a gym, and a spa with sauna, steam rooms and Jacuzzis.

• Fees and surprises: Check breakfast inclusion; parking, airport transfers and pets carry extra charges.
