Axel's take: 8.9/10

A stylish airport stay with standout bathrooms, but not a downtown Vancouver base. a design-led 5-star boutique hotel near Vancouver Airport in Richmond, scored for what it is.

Versante is a 5-star boutique hotel in Richmond that makes an airport stop feel like a proper part of the trip. It’s a strong pick for travelers who want distinctive design without sacrificing comfort: Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the spacious rooms, comfortable beds, attentive staff and exceptionally clean interiors. The bathrooms are a particular strength, with heated shower floors and freestanding tubs in most categories. A rooftop pool and hot tub add substance beyond the bold wallpaper.

The main compromise is the setting: convenient for YVR, less useful for exploring Vancouver on foot. The complimentary airport shuttle runs limited hours and needs arranging, while parking and breakfast cost extra. Light sleepers should consider the north-facing Deluxe rooms, which the hotel describes as quieter. We’d skip it for a sightseeing-first Vancouver stay, but happily shortlist it for a comfortable airport overnight.

• Best for: comfort-focused airport stopovers; couples who enjoy bold design; Richmond business trips

• Watch out for: Richmond location, not downtown Vancouver; airport shuttle has limited hours; parking and breakfast cost extra

• Location: Near YVR and within walking distance of SkyTrain stations; better for airport access than downtown sightseeing.

• Rooms: Boldly decorated, comfortable rooms; most have soaking tubs, while north-facing Deluxe categories are advertised as quieter.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength: Booking.com and Expedia both show excellent cleanliness scores.

• Service: Recent guests repeatedly praise helpful staff; shuttle availability can be constrained at busy times.

• Amenities: Rooftop pool, hot tub and gym; Ova is the current restaurant, replacing Bruno.

• Fees and surprises: Paid valet parking, breakfast and dog stays; incidental deposit required. Expedia lists February–May dining closures, so confirm spring arrangements.
