Axel's take: 9.0/10

A strong Yaletown pick for personal service, comfortable rooms and car-free exploring. an upscale boutique hotel in lively Yaletown, scored for what it is.

OPUS is an upscale boutique hotel in Yaletown, and a strong pick if you prefer personality and attentive service to big-hotel facilities. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests consistently praise the helpful staff, spotless rooms and comfortable beds. Bold colours give the rooms character, while heated bathroom floors add comfort. Restaurants, the waterfront and the Canada Line station across the street make this an especially convenient base without a car.

The trade-off is the lively setting: some guests report street, restaurant or adjoining-room noise, so light sleepers should request a quieter room away from connecting doors. Entry-level rooms can feel compact for the price. Valet parking and pet stays cost extra, and spa treatments are arranged off-site. We'd choose it for a city break rather than a facilities-focused retreat.

• Best for: couples on a city break; car-free Vancouver visits; travelers who value personal service

• Watch out for: noise in some rooms; compact entry-level rooms; paid valet parking and pet fee

• Location: Walkable Yaletown setting opposite the Canada Line station, near restaurants and the waterfront.

• Rooms: Colourful styling, comfortable beds and heated bathroom floors; size and noise exposure vary.

• Cleanliness: Strong cleanliness ratings, backed by repeated recent praise for housekeeping.

• Service: Friendly, attentive front-desk staff are the most consistent standout across review sites.

• Amenities: Capo restaurant, cocktail bar, fitness centre and complimentary bikes; spa treatments are off-site.

• Fees and surprises: Valet parking and pets carry charges; check breakfast inclusions and dining extras.
