Axel's take: 8.4/10

Grand downtown character and attentive staff, with some uneven room finishes. a historic luxury hotel in downtown Vancouver, scored for what it is.

Fairmont Hotel Vancouver is a historic luxury hotel whose strongest assets are its downtown location and staff. It's a strong pick if you prefer traditional grandeur to contemporary design: shopping, restaurants and SkyTrain stations are close by. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise helpful employees, comfortable beds and housekeeping. Notch8 adds a convenient restaurant and bar, while the indoor pool, sauna and well-equipped gym cover the essentials.

The reservation is less about service than consistency of condition. Some recent Tripadvisor guests describe worn furniture and tired decor, despite many others finding their rooms fresh and comfortable. Hallway noise also gets mentioned. Parking is expensive, and there's no hot tub. We'd choose it for a characterful city stay, but skip it if uniformly immaculate, modern luxury is the priority.

• Best for: travelers who enjoy historic hotels; car-free downtown sightseeing; couples wanting traditional full-service comfort

• Watch out for: uneven room condition; occasional hallway noise; expensive parking

• Location: Central downtown, near Robson Street shopping and SkyTrain; not a waterfront or beach hotel.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds earn praise, but some guests report worn furnishings and hallway noise.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall feedback, including high Expedia cleanliness ratings; isolated carpet complaints are not the dominant picture.

• Service: Helpful front-desk, concierge and housekeeping teams are recurring strengths across recent reviews.

• Amenities: Notch8 restaurant and bar, indoor pool, gym and sauna; no hot tub.

• Fees and surprises: Self-parking and valet cost extra; the official pet policy also specifies a cleaning fee.
