Axel's take: 8.9/10

A strong downtown choice when space and a kitchen matter more than hotel extras. A mid-range apartment-style hotel in downtown Vancouver, scored for what it is.

Carmana is a mid-range apartment-style hotel, and we'd put it high on the list for families and longer Vancouver stays. Its one- and two-bedroom suites offer separate living areas and full kitchens, with a supermarket across the street and Robson Street close by. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the generous space, cleanliness and helpful staff; Booking.com feedback reinforces those strengths. You're choosing practical comfort and independence rather than a full-service luxury experience.

The trade-offs are mostly about extras: there's a gym and shared laundry, but no pool or on-site restaurant. Some guests find the furnishings dated, although recent feedback is overwhelmingly positive about upkeep. Parking costs extra, certain sofa beds carry additional fees, and balconies aren't universal. We'd skip it if resort-style facilities matter more than having room to spread out.

• Best for: Families wanting separate bedrooms; Longer stays with self-catering; Travelers exploring downtown on foot

• Watch out for: Limited full-service hotel amenities; Parking and some sofa beds cost extra; Not every suite has a balcony

• Location: Central Alberni Street setting near Robson shopping, restaurants and transit; supermarket opposite.

• Rooms: Generous suites with full kitchens and separate living spaces; some guests find furnishings dated.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent guest feedback, with daily housekeeping advertised.

• Service: Helpful staff earn frequent praise; the hotel advertises a 24-hour front desk and concierge.

• Amenities: Gym with Peloton bikes, shared laundry and free Wi-Fi; no pool or on-site restaurant.

• Fees and surprises: Paid gated parking, a refundable damage deposit and additional charges for certain sofa beds.
