Axel's take: 8.3/10

Strong for family pool days, but ongoing renovations compromise the upscale escape. A large upscale family-and-golf resort in the Hill Country, scored for what it is.

This sprawling upscale resort is a strong pick for families who want the hotel itself to be the vacation. The nine-acre River Bluff water park is the main draw, backed by two golf courses, Lantana Spa and multiple restaurants. Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, clean rooms and the grounds. We'd choose it for an activity-filled family break rather than an intimate luxury retreat.

The biggest current drawback is guestroom and exterior renovation, which Marriott says runs from summer 2026 through spring 2027, with daytime noise and temporary balcony closures. Recent guests confirm that disruption varies by room. Older-room furnishings, busy-period crowds and expensive dining also temper the appeal, while resort and parking fees add to the bill. Skip it if uninterrupted quiet or easy River Walk sightseeing matters more than pools and on-site activities.

• Best for: Families planning pool-focused vacations; Golfers traveling with family; Travelers happy to stay on property

• Watch out for: Renovation noise and temporary balcony closures through spring 2027; Busy-period pool and restaurant crowds; Resort fee, paid parking and expensive dining

• Location: Outlying Hill Country setting; better for a resort stay than downtown sightseeing, with no hotel airport shuttle.

• Rooms: Generally comfortable, but older furnishings draw criticism; renovation means room condition and balcony access vary.

• Cleanliness: Broadly positive across guest sources, with occasional housekeeping lapses rather than a defining pattern.

• Service: Helpful, welcoming staff earn repeated praise, though busy periods can stretch restaurant and poolside service.

• Amenities: Nine-acre water park, lazy river, slides, adults-only pool, two golf courses, spa and fitness center.

• Fees and surprises: Resort fee and separate parking charges; confirm renovation exposure and balcony availability before booking.
