Axel's take: 8.3/10

A comfortable Tijuana landmark, stronger on facilities and location than consistently polished rooms. An established upscale business-and-casino hotel on Agua Caliente Boulevard, scored for what it is.

Grand Hotel Tijuana is an established upscale business-and-casino hotel, and we'd pick it for practical comfort rather than flawless five-star luxury. Booking.com and Expedia show strong overall ratings, with cleanliness, comfortable beds and location among its strengths. Recent Expedia and Hotels.com guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, dining and the pool. City or golf-course views add appeal, while nearby restaurants make this a useful base beyond the hotel's own facilities.

The main compromise is uneven room condition. Tripadvisor guests describe aging furnishings and maintenance issues, and a recent Hotels.com guest also wanted room updates despite enjoying the stay. Service attracts some sharp criticism on Tripadvisor, although the larger booking-site picture is much more positive. Allow for parking charges, breakfast extras and an incidental deposit. We'd skip it if contemporary rooms and consistently polished luxury service are your priorities.

• Best for: Business travelers; Restaurant-focused city breaks; Travelers wanting a pool and casino

• Watch out for: Some rooms need updating; Uneven service reports; Parking, breakfast and deposit extras

• Location: Agua Caliente Boulevard base near restaurants, shopping and Club Campestre, rather than downtown sightseeing.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and city or golf-course views; dated furnishings and maintenance complaints affect some rooms.

• Cleanliness: Strong Booking.com and Expedia cleanliness scores, reinforced by recent guest comments.

• Service: Recent booking-site reviews largely praise staff; Tripadvisor shows less consistent problem handling.

• Amenities: Outdoor pool, hot tub, gym, casino, restaurants and bars; the golf course is adjacent, not a hotel amenity.

• Fees and surprises: Parking and buffet breakfast carry extra charges; expect an incidental deposit and check your booking's inclusions.
