Axel's take: 8.5/10

A characterful campus base with strong service, but nearby construction warrants checking. a historic 3-star boutique hotel beside Syracuse University, scored for what it is.

Hotel Skyler is a historic 3-star boutique hotel in a converted synagogue, and a strong pick for Syracuse University or nearby hospital visits. Its appeal is character and convenience rather than extensive facilities. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean, comfortable rooms and genuinely helpful staff. We'd choose it over a generic chain hotel when walking to campus matters most.

The trade-offs are modest dining options and an older building: some guests mention squeaky floors or noisy heating and cooling. More importantly, the new Graduate by Hilton hotel is under construction on the adjoining University Avenue site; ask about work hours and room placement if quiet matters. Breakfast costs extra, and Hilton now lists paid parking despite booking sites advertising it free. We'd skip it for a reliably silent retreat or full-service hotel experience.

• Best for: Syracuse University visitors; hospital visitors; travelers who prefer historic character

• Watch out for: adjoining Graduate by Hilton construction; occasional floor and HVAC noise; paid breakfast and conflicting parking information

• Location: Walkable to Syracuse University, Marshall Street and nearby hospitals.

• Rooms: Comfortable rooms with distinctive layouts; some reports of creaky floors and HVAC noise.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent guest feedback.

• Service: Guests repeatedly praise helpful, accommodating front-desk staff.

• Amenities: Lobby bar and light dining, 24-hour gym, free Wi-Fi; airport shuttle subject to availability.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast is extra; trust Hilton's paid-parking policy over free-parking listings, and check adjoining construction.
