#4 of 4 hotels in Downtown & Missouri State by Axel's take. Downtown & Missouri State is #1 of 5 places to stay in Springfield, Missouri. The best hotels in Downtown & Missouri State, ranked · Where to stay in Springfield, Missouri

Axel's take: 6.9/10

A convenient downtown base, but tired rooms make it a compromise. An aging 3-star convention hotel in downtown Springfield, scored for what it is.

University Plaza is an aging 3-star convention hotel whose strongest selling point is its downtown Springfield location. It's a practical pick for Expo Center events, Missouri State visits and baseball trips, with spacious rooms and on-site dining. Expedia guests regularly praise the friendly staff, and plenty report clean, comfortable stays. We'd choose it for convenience rather than the promise of a polished hotel experience.

The catch is the gap between the inviting public spaces and the bedrooms. Tripadvisor and recent Expedia reviews repeatedly describe worn furnishings, stained carpets and bathroom maintenance problems; air-conditioning complaints also recur. Cleanliness earns positive feedback overall, but isn't consistent enough to ignore those reports. Parking and breakfast cost extra. We'd skip it if fresh rooms, dependable upkeep or a quiet, trouble-free stay matter more than location.

  • Best for: Convention attendees prioritizing convenience; Missouri State visitors; Baseball fans staying downtown

  • Watch out for: Dated rooms and recurring maintenance complaints; Uneven housekeeping and stained carpets; Parking and breakfast charges

  • Location: Convenient downtown setting near the Expo Center, Missouri State and the baseball stadium.

  • Rooms: Generously sized, but worn furnishings, bathroom defects and air-conditioning issues recur in reviews.

  • Cleanliness: Many guests report clean rooms; others describe stained carpets, odors and housekeeping lapses.

  • Service: Friendly staff are a recurring strength, although problem resolution receives mixed feedback.

  • Amenities: Indoor and seasonal outdoor pools, fitness facilities, restaurant, lounge and coffee shop.

  • Fees and surprises: Self-parking and breakfast carry extra charges; confirm breakfast availability and inclusions.
