Axel's take: 7.0/10

A practical budget base near the Malecón, but choose your room carefully. A no-frills budget guesthouse near the Malecón, scored for what it is.

Malecon Rooms & Hotel is a no-frills budget guesthouse above a commercial plaza, rather than a beachfront hotel. We'd consider it for a short, inexpensive city stay: Booking.com guests repeatedly praise the convenient location, helpful staff and comfortable beds, while Expedia lists breakfast and Wi-Fi as included. Overall feedback is good rather than outstanding, which fits a place selling the basics rather than polished comfort.

The room you book matters. Guests describe small rooms with little natural light, and some categories have a private bathroom outside the bedroom. Stairs-only access makes luggage awkward; recurring complaints also concern noise, bathroom maintenance and inconsistent housekeeping. Confirm the bathroom arrangement, request a quieter room and clarify cleaning before arrival. We'd skip it for a long, restful holiday or if step-free access is essential.

• Best for: Budget-conscious solo travelers; Short city stays; Visitors to the university area

• Watch out for: Stairs-only access; Small rooms and variable noise; Some private bathrooms are outside the room

• Location: Convenient for the university area and a short walk from the Malecón, but not directly waterfront.

• Rooms: Basic and often compact; confirm windows, bathroom location and the exact room category.

• Cleanliness: Many guests find it clean on arrival, but housekeeping frequency draws repeated complaints.

• Service: Helpful staff earn frequent praise, though service and problem handling are not uniformly consistent.

• Amenities: Expedia lists continental breakfast, air conditioning, free Wi-Fi and free parking; there is no elevator.

• Fees and surprises: Airport transfers cost extra; confirm housekeeping arrangements and parking availability before arrival.
