Axel's take: 6.2/10

A useful Malecón location, but upkeep and room reliability are uneven. a basic budget hotel near Santo Domingo’s Malecón, scored for what it is.

Maison Gautreaux is a basic budget hotel near the Malecón, not a full-service three-star experience. Its strongest argument is location: the waterfront and nearby restaurants are convenient, and guests regularly praise the affordability and helpful staff. Expedia’s overall feedback is more positive than Booking.com’s, but both suggest a property where the room you get matters. We’d consider it for a short, low-cost city stay, with modest expectations.

The compromises go beyond dated furniture. Recent reviews describe inconsistent cleaning, broken room fittings, unreliable hot water and occasional reservation failures; cockroaches appear in reports on more than one platform. The advertised hot tub was reported out of service by guests in March and April 2026, so confirm it works before booking. There’s no elevator, either. We’d skip it if dependable housekeeping, step-free access or consistently working amenities matter more than keeping costs down.

• Best for: budget-minded city visitors; short stays near the Malecón

• Watch out for: uneven cleaning and maintenance; reservation problems reported across sites; no elevator; hot-tub operation uncertain

• Location: Convenient Gascue base near the Malecón and restaurants, rather than in the Colonial Zone.

• Rooms: Basic, dated accommodation; guests disagree on comfort and report inconsistent hot water and working fittings.

• Cleanliness: Mixed feedback, including recent reports of dirty bathrooms, dust and cockroaches.

• Service: Helpful staff earn praise, but reservation handling and problem resolution draw repeated complaints.

• Amenities: Wi-Fi, air conditioning, terrace and bar are listed; guests reported the advertised hot tub not working in spring 2026.

• Fees and surprises: Airport transfers cost extra; no elevator, and booking sites give conflicting check-in and checkout times.
