Axel's take: 9.0/10

A strong Colonial Zone choice for historic character, comfortable rooms and genuinely warm service. an upscale boutique-style hotel in Santo Domingo’s Colonial Zone, scored for what it is.

Kimpton Las Mercedes is an upscale, boutique-style city hotel combining restored historic architecture with contemporary rooms. It’s a strong pick for exploring Santo Domingo on foot without sacrificing comfort. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the cleanliness, welcoming staff and comfortable beds; Booking.com’s ratings also put comfort and location among its strongest points. The landscaped courtyard, rooftop pool, spa and gym give it more substance than just attractive design.

The trade-offs are mostly small, but worth knowing: some guests report music carrying into rooms, and mustiness appears in several accounts across sites. Dining gets plenty of praise, though restaurant prices draw complaints. Light sleepers should request a quieter room, and breakfast inclusion needs checking against your booking. We’d choose it for a comfortable cultural city break, not a beach-resort holiday.

• Best for: couples on a cultural city break; travelers exploring the Colonial Zone on foot; design-conscious travelers

• Watch out for: occasional music noise in rooms; some reports of musty rooms; pricey on-site dining

• Location: Central Colonial Zone setting, within walking distance of major historic sights and restaurants.

• Rooms: Modern design and comfortable beds earn strong praise; occasional noise and mustiness are the main cautions.

• Cleanliness: Consistently praised across major sites, with strong Booking.com cleanliness ratings.

• Service: Warm, attentive staff are a recurring strength, despite occasional housekeeping or communication lapses.

• Amenities: Rooftop pool, spa, 24-hour gym, restaurants and an evening reception; no beach setting.

• Fees and surprises: IHG lists complimentary parking and no standard pet charge; confirm breakfast inclusion and early-check-in charges.
