Axel's take: 8.5/10

A strong-value city base, with welcoming staff and noise caveats a straightforward 3-star city hotel near the Malecón, scored for what it is.

Hotel Riazor is a straightforward 3-star in Gazcue, close to the Malecón rather than inside the Colonial Zone. It’s a strong pick for a practical city stay: recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise clean rooms and helpful staff, while Booking.com’s overall ratings reinforce that picture. The hotel advertises recently renovated rooms, and guests appreciate the convenient Manolo restaurant next door. Free parking adds to the appeal.

The main compromise is quiet. Some guests mention street noise, and Expedia currently warns of construction at a neighboring building; ask about its status before booking. Recent guest reports also describe intermittent elevator outages, worth checking if stairs would be difficult. Breakfast inclusion differs between listings, so confirm your booking. We’d choose it for value and convenience, not a hushed retreat or a stay immersed in the historic district.

• Best for: value-minded city visitors; travelers with a car; short business stays

• Watch out for: neighboring construction and occasional street noise; recent reports of elevator outages; breakfast inclusion varies by listing

• Location: Gazcue base near the Malecón; the Colonial Zone is a short drive away.

• Rooms: Functional, air-conditioned rooms; the hotel advertises recent renovations.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent guest reviews, despite occasional exceptions.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff earn repeated praise across sites.

• Amenities: Manolo restaurant, 24-hour reception, free Wi-Fi and free parking; check elevator reliability.

• Fees and surprises: Confirm breakfast inclusion and neighboring construction status; airport transfers cost extra.
