Axel's take: 8.7/10

Old-school comfort and excellent staff make this a strong downtown base. a traditional five-star hotel in Santiago’s historic center, scored for what it is.

Hotel Plaza San Francisco is a traditional five-star hotel whose strengths are spacious rooms, attentive service and easy access to historic Santiago. It’s a strong pick for sightseeing rather than contemporary luxury: Universidad de Chile metro is close, and central landmarks are walkable. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise cleanliness, helpful staff and the substantial breakfast. The indoor pool, gym and Bristol restaurant round out a comfortable city base.

The trade-off is an older-fashioned finish: dark wood and dated furnishings appeal more to traditionalists than design lovers. Some guests report traffic noise, while Tripadvisor reviews also describe disruptive terrace events and busy conference periods. We'd request a quiet room away from event spaces and check the deposit arrangements before arrival. Skip it if fresh interiors and reliably hushed surroundings matter most.

• Best for: first-time Santiago sightseers; travelers who prefer traditional hotels; families wanting an indoor pool

• Watch out for: dated furnishings and dark public spaces; traffic and occasional event noise; security deposit at check-in

• Location: Central landmarks and Universidad de Chile metro are within walking distance.

• Rooms: Spacious and generally comfortable, with traditional decor showing some age.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com ratings and recent Expedia reviews.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff earn widespread praise; occasional communication and billing issues surface.

• Amenities: Indoor pool, gym, spa treatments and Bristol restaurant; breakfast is frequently praised.

• Fees and surprises: Guests report a security deposit; confirm accepted cards and review incidental charges.
