Axel's take: 6.8/10

A practical Marin base, but construction currently limits its appeal. A mid-range hilltop hotel, formerly Four Points, undergoing a major renovation, scored for what it is.

Marin Hilltop is a mid-range hotel, formerly the Four Points, that makes more sense as a driving base than a destination stay. Free parking, comfortable beds and easy access to Marin are its strengths. Expedia and Tripadvisor guests regularly praise the staff, while newer feedback welcomes the refurbished rooms. We'd consider it for a short overnight, provided you confirm a renovated room.

The catch is substantial: Marriott currently confirms a full-property renovation, with both the pool and fitness room unavailable. Recent guests also report daytime construction noise and disrupted elevator access, although others found the work manageable. Older-room wear and noisy air-conditioning remain concerns. We'd skip it for a pool getaway, daytime rest or a polished four-star experience; confirm construction arrangements before committing.

• Best for: Short stays with a car; Travelers exploring Marin; Guests prioritizing free parking

• Watch out for: Major renovation and daytime construction noise; Pool and fitness room temporarily closed; Room condition and air-conditioning noise vary

• Location: Convenient for driving around Marin; outside downtown San Rafael.

• Rooms: Renovated rooms draw praise; older rooms show wear, and some guests report noisy air-conditioning.

• Cleanliness: Recent Expedia feedback is largely positive, with some contrary reports on Tripadvisor.

• Service: Friendly staff are a recurring strength, though problem handling receives mixed feedback.

• Amenities: Restaurant remains listed; Marriott confirms the pool and fitness room are temporarily unavailable.

• Fees and surprises: Parking is complimentary; breakfast inclusion varies, pet fees apply, and housekeeping is every other day.
