Axel's take: 7.7/10

Come for the beach and nightlife, not flawless luxury. A historic upscale beachfront resort and casino with lively nightlife, scored for what it is.

Fairmont El San Juan is a historic upscale beachfront resort and casino, strongest when you treat it as a lively vacation base rather than a flawless luxury retreat. Direct access to Isla Verde Beach, four pools and an atmospheric lobby give it plenty of appeal. Recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise friendly staff, clean rooms and the entertainment; Tripadvisor guests also appreciate the beach and grounds. We'd choose it for days by the water followed by cocktails and music.

The rooms and service are less consistent than the public spaces suggest. Recent guests describe worn finishes and uneven problem handling, alongside many comfortable stays. Nightlife and aircraft noise can intrude, while the mandatory resort fee, paid parking and expensive dining weaken value. We'd skip it for a quiet honeymoon or polished, dependable luxury.

• Best for: Beachgoers who enjoy nightlife; Couples and friends wanting an active resort; Short breaks close to the airport

• Watch out for: Nightlife and aircraft noise; Uneven room condition and problem handling; Mandatory resort fee and costly extras

• Location: Directly on Isla Verde Beach near the airport; Old San Juan requires a drive.

• Rooms: Generally spacious and comfortable, but recurring reports of wear undermine luxury expectations.

• Cleanliness: Mostly positive overall, though some recent Tripadvisor guests report musty smells and housekeeping lapses.

• Service: Warm staff earn frequent praise; front-desk follow-through and service speed are less dependable.

• Amenities: Four outdoor pools, beach access, spa, substantial gym, restaurants, casino and live entertainment.

• Fees and surprises: Mandatory Resort Experience Fee; parking and many dining, spa and cabana extras cost more.
