Axel's take: 8.1/10

A strong Moscone base with comfortable rooms, but check renovation status and extras. a design-led upscale 4-star in SoMa beside SFMOMA and Moscone, scored for what it is.

W San Francisco is a design-led upscale 4-star whose strongest asset is its SoMa location, beside SFMOMA and across from Moscone. We'd pick it for a conference or museum-focused city break. Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean, comfortable rooms and helpful staff; the well-equipped FIT gym adds substance beyond the styling.

The main caveat is the first-floor renovation affecting the Living Room, reception and dining. Marriott scheduled completion for September 9, 2026, but its renovation notice remains online without clear confirmation that everything has reopened; summer guests reported reduced facilities. Confirm before booking if the bar and restaurant matter. A daily destination fee and expensive valet parking also weaken value, while billing complaints warrant checking your folio. We'd skip it for a quiet, traditional luxury escape.

• Best for: Moscone conference travelers; museum-focused city breaks; travelers who prioritize a good gym

• Watch out for: Confirm lobby and dining renovation completion; Daily destination fee and expensive valet; Check your final bill carefully

• Location: Excellent for Moscone, SFMOMA and Yerba Buena Gardens, with downtown transit nearby.

• Rooms: Generally comfortable and well maintained; views vary substantially by room category.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across major booking sites and recent guest feedback.

• Service: Helpful staff earn frequent praise, though billing resolution draws some complaints.

• Amenities: Well-equipped FIT gym; confirm current Living Room and dining operations after the first-floor renovation.

• Fees and surprises: Mandatory destination fee includes food-and-drink credit and museum tickets; valet and pets cost extra.
