Axel's take: 8.1/10

A strong budget base with free parking, helpful staff and some motel compromises. A no-frills 2-star motor motel in San Francisco’s Marina District, scored for what it is.

Lombard Plaza is a straightforward 2-star motor motel that gets the important budget basics right. We'd pick it for a practical San Francisco stay: recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and helpful staff, while Chestnut Street’s restaurants and nearby buses make the location useful beyond the parking lot. Free on-site parking is a meaningful advantage, and rooms have microwaves, fridges and coffee makers.

The compromises are mostly classic motel ones: exterior corridors, basic surroundings and parking spaces that several guests describe as extremely tight. Traffic and neighboring-room noise can intrude; requesting an upstairs room toward the back is sensible. It’s good bang for your buck if you want a clean sightseeing base, but we'd skip it for polished interiors, extensive facilities or reliably quiet nights.

• Best for: Budget-minded sightseeing trips; Drivers with compact cars; Travelers who prioritize restaurants and transit

• Watch out for: Very tight, limited parking; Potential traffic and neighboring-room noise; Deposit collected at check-in

• Location: Convenient Marina base near Chestnut Street dining, bus stops and walks toward Fort Mason.

• Rooms: Simple, exterior-access rooms with air conditioning, fridges, microwaves and coffee makers; guests generally praise bed comfort.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength in recent guest feedback, supported by Booking.com’s cleanliness rating of 8.2/10.

• Service: Friendly, helpful reception is a recurring positive across Tripadvisor and Expedia reviews.

• Amenities: Practical rather than resort-style: free Wi-Fi, guest laundry, free parking and a 24-hour front desk.

• Fees and surprises: The official policy requires a check-in deposit; parking is free, but guests repeatedly warn about cramped spaces.
