Axel's take: 7.8/10

A practical downtown base with friendly staff, small rooms and old-building compromises. A budget-friendly historic 3-star near Union Square, scored for what it is.

King George is a budget-friendly historic 3-star, not a luxury hotel. It’s a good pick for travelers who prioritize Union Square, theaters and easy transit over spacious rooms. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, comfortable beds and generally clean accommodation. Morning coffee and pastries, plus lobby games, add useful comforts without changing its simple character.

The compromises are compact rooms, dated finishes, street noise and no air conditioning; ceiling fans do the cooling. Guests also mention a slow elevator, with some reporting outages, so confirm its status if stairs would be difficult. Some travelers find the surrounding streets uncomfortable after dark. We’d choose it for a short sightseeing or theater trip, but skip it for quiet, guaranteed cooling or a polished full-service stay.

• Best for: Budget-conscious city explorers; Theater and concert trips; Travelers using public transit

• Watch out for: No air conditioning; Compact rooms and street noise; Slow elevator with reported outages

• Location: Convenient for Union Square and Powell Street transit; some guests feel uncomfortable walking nearby after dark.

• Rooms: Small, traditionally styled rooms with comfortable beds, visible age and ceiling fans rather than air conditioning.

• Cleanliness: Mostly positive across major sites, though some guests report worn carpets or rooms needing a fresher finish.

• Service: Friendly, helpful front-desk staff are a consistent strength; management responsiveness receives occasional criticism.

• Amenities: Wi-Fi, morning coffee and pastries, lobby games and filtered water; mini-fridges available on request.

• Fees and surprises: The hotel says amenity fees ended for reservations made after July 10, 2026; older bookings may retain them. An incidental hold applies, and nearby garage parking costs extra.
