Axel's take: 8.3/10

A strong downtown base with personality, helpful staff and a few practical compromises. a playful 4-star boutique hotel in downtown SoMa, scored for what it is.

Hotel Zetta is a playful 4-star boutique hotel in SoMa, and a strong pick for travelers who want downtown convenience without a generic business-hotel feel. Recent Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and welcoming staff. Powell Street transit, Moscone and SFMOMA are nearby, while the games-filled Playroom gives the hotel a genuinely sociable side.

There are a few practical limitations: some rooms face nearby windows and lack daylight, a mandatory nightly amenities fee applies to most bookings, and valet parking costs extra. The hotel now says room service is unavailable, despite listings elsewhere. We'd request a brighter room and skip Zetta if you want full-service luxury or a quieter neighborhood setting rather than a busy downtown base.

• Best for: Moscone business travelers; Transit-first city breaks; Couples who enjoy playful design

• Watch out for: Limited daylight in some rooms; Nightly amenities fee and paid valet; Busy downtown surroundings

• Location: Convenient for Powell Street transit, Moscone and SFMOMA; the surrounding streets can feel gritty.

• Rooms: Comfort and cleanliness earn praise; request good daylight because some windows face neighboring rooms.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent guest feedback, supported by strong Booking.com and Expedia cleanliness ratings.

• Service: Friendly, accommodating staff are a repeated highlight across Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Expedia.

• Amenities: Playroom, 24-hour gym, The Cavalier and lobby lounge; the official FAQ says no room service.

• Fees and surprises: Most bookings carry a nightly amenities fee; valet and pets cost extra, and check-in requires a refundable incidental hold.
