Axel's take: 8.7/10

A strong downtown pick for gracious service and fitness facilities, with trolley noise to consider. An ornate, traditional 4-star hotel in downtown San Diego, scored for what it is.

The Westgate is a traditional 4-star downtown hotel with French-inspired interiors rather than a sleek, contemporary look. We'd choose it for spacious rooms, attentive service and unusually substantial wellness facilities. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise cleanliness and welcoming staff; the rooftop pool and AquaVie gym give it more substance than the grand lobby alone suggests. It's especially appealing for a theater weekend or a city break with proper workout time.

The main compromise is noise: trolley sounds recur in recent reviews, including otherwise enthusiastic ones. Light sleepers should request a quieter room and discuss its position before booking. Expedia also lists a nightly resort fee, while valet parking costs extra. We'd skip it if uninterrupted quiet or minimalist interiors matter more than traditional character and warm service.

• Best for: Theater weekends; Travelers who prioritize a serious gym; Couples who like traditional elegance

• Watch out for: Trolley noise can disturb sleep; Nightly resort fee and paid valet parking; Traditional rather than contemporary decor

• Location: Convenient for Civic Theatre and Civic Center trolley access, though transit brings noise.

• Rooms: Spacious, traditionally furnished rooms draw praise; room position matters for noise.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent Expedia and Tripadvisor feedback.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff are among the most consistently praised features.

• Amenities: AquaVie offers a large gym, classes, sauna, steam rooms, heated rooftop pool and hot tub.

• Fees and surprises: Nightly resort fee, separate valet charges and an incidental card hold; no complimentary coffee.
