Axel's take: 8.4/10

A strong Gaslamp base if you prefer a lively lobby to a roomy bedroom. a lively, select-service mid-range hotel in the Gaslamp Quarter, scored for what it is.

Moxy is a social, select-service mid-range hotel, and a strong pick for a short Gaslamp stay. The appeal is downstairs and outside: bar-centered check-in, lobby games, and restaurants and nightlife within easy walking distance. Expedia guests consistently praise the staff and clean rooms, while Tripadvisor reviews reinforce the welcoming service. We'd choose it for a weekend spent exploring rather than lounging in the bedroom.

The recurring compromise is space: bedrooms are genuinely compact, especially for two people with luggage. Street-facing rooms also draw noise complaints; request an inward-facing room, though quiet isn't guaranteed. Breakfast costs extra, parking is valet-only and expensive, and Marriott lists a nightly district surcharge. We'd skip it for a quiet retreat, a family trip needing room to spread out, or a longer stay with substantial luggage.

• Best for: Solo travelers packing light; Couples on nightlife weekends; Car-free downtown stays

• Watch out for: Very compact bedrooms; Noise in street-facing rooms; Costly valet parking and district surcharge

• Location: Walkable Gaslamp setting for dining and nightlife, with Petco Park and the convention center within walking distance.

• Rooms: Modern, minimalist rooms; limited floor space is the most consistent drawback.

• Cleanliness: Generally a strength across guest ratings and recent Expedia feedback; housekeeping is every other day.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff earn repeated praise; reception shares space with the bar.

• Amenities: Lobby games, Bar Moxy, a fitness center and Wi-Fi; breakfast is not complimentary.

• Fees and surprises: Marriott lists paid valet-only parking, an oversized-vehicle supplement and a nightly district surcharge.
