Axel's take: 8.3/10

A strong ballpark base with comfortable rooms, but watch the added fees. a boutique-style 4-star in East Village beside the Gaslamp Quarter, scored for what it is.

This boutique-style 4-star in East Village is a strong pick for Padres games, conventions and nights around the Gaslamp Quarter. Recent Expedia and Hotels.com guests repeatedly praise spacious, clean rooms, comfortable beds and welcoming staff; Booking.com’s cleanliness and comfort scores reinforce that picture. Borrego, the rooftop bar overlooking the ballpark and skyline, gives it an appealing extra beyond a convenient downtown bed.

The main catch is the extras: mandatory destination and service fees, costly valet parking and a separate pet charge. Tripadvisor guests also flag street and neighboring-room noise, plus some housekeeping inconsistencies, although the overall cleanliness picture remains strong. There’s a gym but no pool. We’d choose it for a walkable city stay, not a quiet resort break; light sleepers and travelers bringing a car should weigh the trade-offs.

• Best for: Padres fans; convention attendees; car-free downtown weekends

• Watch out for: Mandatory destination and service fees; Costly valet parking; Street and neighboring-room noise

• Location: East Village location close to Petco Park, Gaslamp dining and the convention center.

• Rooms: Guests frequently praise generous space and comfortable beds; noise isolation gets mixed reports.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall cleanliness ratings, with some reports of inconsistent housekeeping.

• Service: Welcoming, helpful staff are a recurring strength across recent guest reviews.

• Amenities: Borrego rooftop bar, Table 509 restaurant and a fitness center; no swimming pool.

• Fees and surprises: Mandatory destination and service fees; valet parking, pets and breakfast carry additional charges.
