Axel's take: 8.1/10

A strong downtown base, provided nightlife matters more than guaranteed quiet. a compact 3-star hotel in the Gaslamp Quarter, scored for what it is.

This compact 3-star Courtyard is a strong pick for convention trips, Padres games and evenings in the Gaslamp Quarter. Its biggest advantage is being able to walk to all three. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise clean, comfortable rooms and helpful staff, while The Nolen rooftop bar adds something beyond the usual business-hotel basics. We'd choose it for a convenient city stay rather than a hotel-centered vacation.

The trade-off is sleep: nightclub bass and street noise recur in guest feedback, particularly on weekends. Some rooms are small and face neighboring walls, so don't assume a spacious room or open view. Breakfast costs extra, parking is valet-only and expensive, and Marriott lists a nightly district surcharge. We'd skip it if you're a light sleeper or want generous space; it makes more sense without a car.

• Best for: convention attendees; Padres fans; travelers exploring Gaslamp nightlife

• Watch out for: weekend nightclub and street noise; small rooms and obstructed views; costly valet parking and district surcharge

• Location: Walkable to the convention center, Petco Park, restaurants and bars.

• Rooms: Generally comfortable, but some are compact with views of neighboring walls.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength in recent feedback, supported by strong category ratings.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff earn repeated praise across guest-review sites.

• Amenities: The Nolen rooftop bar, Bistro dining and a fitness center; breakfast is not complimentary.

• Fees and surprises: Valet-only parking, a nightly district surcharge and separately charged breakfast.
