Axel's take: 8.2/10

Clean rooms and helpful staff make this a strong base, but soundproofing disappoints. a renovated 3-star near Manzoni metro, outside Rome’s main sightseeing core, scored for what it is.

The Cross is a renovated 3-star near Porta Maggiore: a strong pick for travelers who want clean, comfortable basics rather than a landmark address. Recent Expedia, Tripadvisor and Trip.com guests repeatedly praise housekeeping and helpful reception staff. The courtyard garden, bar and small pool add more appeal than the class suggests, while Manzoni metro is roughly a five-to-eight-minute walk away.

The trade-off is location and quiet: expect metro rides or longer walks to many headline sights, and don't assume the garden setting means silent bedrooms. Traffic, hallway noise and weak soundproofing recur in reviews. Breakfast gets mixed feedback, particularly on variety, and room sizes differ considerably. We'd choose it for practical sightseeing value, but skip it if you're a light sleeper or want Rome's postcard streets immediately outside.

• Best for: value-minded city-break travelers; couples comfortable using the metro; travelers who appreciate a courtyard bar

• Watch out for: street and hallway noise; variable room sizes; limited breakfast variety

• Location: Near Porta Maggiore and Manzoni metro; useful transport links rather than a prime sightseeing address.

• Rooms: Generally comfortable and modern, but sizes vary and sound insulation is a recurring weakness.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent reviews, with frequent praise for clean rooms.

• Service: Helpful, welcoming reception staff earn repeated praise across several sites.

• Amenities: Garden bar, terraces, free Wi-Fi and a small courtyard pool; the rooftop bar is still advertised as coming soon.

• Fees and surprises: Parking costs extra; check breakfast inclusion and seasonal dining hours. Confirm step-free access because elevator listings conflict.
