Axel's take: 8.9/10

Classic Roman luxury with excellent staff and rooftop views, but an uphill walk home. a classic five-star hotel above the Spanish Steps, scored for what it is.

Splendide Royal is a classic five-star above the Spanish Steps, and a strong pick for travelers who prefer ornate Roman elegance to minimalist design. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the attentive staff, comfortable rooms and thorough housekeeping; Booking.com’s strong comfort and cleanliness ratings reinforce that picture. Mirabelle’s panoramic dining room and the Adèle rooftop bar give it a real advantage for a romantic city break, while breakfast earns plenty of praise.

The main compromise is the setting: convenient for Villa Borghese and the Spanish Steps, but uphill after sightseeing. Reserve rooftop drinks and dinner ahead rather than assuming hotel guests can walk in. Wellness facilities are modest on-site: there’s a gym and treatment room, while the larger Prince Spa and pool are at a sister hotel. We’d skip it if easy, level walking or an on-site pool is essential.

• Best for: couples seeking traditional luxury; travelers who prioritize attentive service; rooftop dining and sunset drinks

• Watch out for: uphill return from central sights; rooftop reservations advisable; main spa and pool are off-site

• Location: Near Villa Borghese and the Spanish Steps; the uphill approach matters after long sightseeing days.

• Rooms: Elegant, well-appointed rooms with strong comfort ratings; views vary by category.

• Cleanliness: Consistently strong across Booking.com ratings and recent Tripadvisor and Expedia feedback.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff are a recurring strength, despite occasional front-desk complaints.

• Amenities: Mirabelle restaurant, Adèle rooftop bar, gym and treatment room; Prince Spa is at a sister hotel.

• Fees and surprises: Check breakfast inclusion and city-tax exclusions; Expedia lists no on-site parking.
