Axel's take: 8.1/10

Warm service and a lovely courtyard outweigh compact rooms and a less-central location. a small, characterful 4-star villa hotel near Porta Maggiore, scored for what it is.

Emona Aquaeductus is a small 4-star villa hotel near Porta Maggiore, better for personal hospitality than polished luxury. We'd pick it for its leafy courtyard, distinctive interiors and consistently praised reception team. Booking.com, Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly highlight helpful sightseeing advice and clean rooms. Manzoni metro is within walking distance, making this a practical base if you don't mind using transit rather than stepping straight into Rome's main sightseeing streets.

The main compromise is space: the smallest doubles are just 10 square metres, and several guests describe cramped bathrooms and limited storage. Breakfast generally gets positive feedback, but isn't included in every booking. Hot-water failures and drilling noise have also been reported; ask whether repairs are complete before committing. We'd skip it if you want spacious, reliably polished four-star accommodation or most major sights immediately outside.

• Best for: couples who value personal service; sightseers comfortable using the metro; travelers who prefer small independent hotels

• Watch out for: very compact entry-level rooms and bathrooms; some distance from the main sightseeing core; reported hot-water failures and drilling; current status unconfirmed

• Location: Near Porta Maggiore and the ancient aqueduct; the official site places Manzoni metro 500 metres away.

• Rooms: Room sizes vary substantially; small doubles are 10 square metres, versus 16 for standard doubles.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall cleanliness ratings and repeated recent praise outweigh scattered complaints.

• Service: Friendly, informative reception staff are the clearest strength across review sites.

• Amenities: Garden courtyard, bar, Wi-Fi, air conditioning and 24-hour reception; breakfast is available.

• Fees and surprises: Parking costs extra, breakfast inclusion varies, and reported repair disruption has no confirmed end date.
