Axel's take: 8.2/10

A strong adults-only beach pick, with warm service but uneven room consistency. An upscale adults-only beachfront all-inclusive, rather than ultra-luxury, scored for what it is.

Riu Palace Macao is an upscale adults-only all-inclusive on Arena Gorda Beach, best for travelers wanting easy beach days with entertainment close by. We'd put it ahead of many package-holiday resorts for its manageable layout, dining choice and welcoming staff—not for flawless five-star luxury. Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the service, food selection and well-kept grounds. RIU's full 2023 renovation refreshed the rooms and restaurants, and three pools give beach days some variety.

The catches are room consistency and noise. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia reviews include recurring damp or musty-room reports, alongside plenty of clean-room praise; some guests also describe maintenance problems. Pool music and evening shows can undermine the adults-only calm. Elite Club reserves some dining, drinks and beach privileges for upgraded bookings. We'd skip it for hushed romance or exacting luxury expectations, but recommend it for sociable couples and friends.

• Best for: Couples wanting beach time and entertainment; Friends seeking an adults-only all-inclusive; Travelers who prefer a manageable resort layout

• Watch out for: Recurring reports of damp or musty rooms; Pool music and evening-show noise; Some privileges restricted to Elite Club

• Location: Directly on Arena Gorda Beach within RIU's larger resort complex; seaweed can affect beach conditions.

• Rooms: Fully renovated in 2023, but recent guests still report some musty smells and maintenance inconsistencies.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall guest ratings, although recent room-cleaning complaints mean consistency is not perfect.

• Service: Friendly, attentive staff are a cross-site strength; resolving room problems can be less consistent.

• Amenities: Three pools, varied restaurants, gym, spa and access to the complex's water park and RIU parties.

• Fees and surprises: Elite Club is a separate upgrade with exclusive dining, lounge, drinks and beach benefits.
