Axel's take: 8.1/10

A strong family all-inclusive for pool days and entertainment, less convincing for quiet luxury. A large, upscale beachfront all-inclusive for families and groups, scored for what it is.

Riu Palace Bavaro is a large, upscale beachfront all-inclusive that works best for families and groups wanting plenty to do. Its September 2024 overhaul brought refreshed rooms, an expanded family area and a food court. We think its strengths are choice and convenience: multiple pools, water-park access, entertainment and round-the-clock dining. Booking.com guests rate cleanliness particularly well, while recent reviews across sites frequently praise comfortable rooms and hardworking restaurant staff.

The trade-off is consistency rather than a shortage of facilities. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests describe uneven food, slow responses to room requests and variable front-desk help alongside plenty of positive stays. Poolside music and busy holiday crowds can undermine relaxation, and seaweed sometimes affects the beach. Some quieter spaces and premium benefits require Elite Club rooms. We'd skip it for a peaceful honeymoon or reliably refined dining.

• Best for: Families who want pools and water slides; Groups seeking activities and nightlife; Travelers who prefer everything on site

• Watch out for: Loud pools and peak-period crowds; Uneven dining and service follow-through; Seaweed can affect beach conditions

• Location: Directly on Arena Gorda Beach; best suited to a resort-centered vacation.

• Rooms: Refreshed in 2024, with family options; request distance from entertainment if noise-sensitive.

• Cleanliness: Generally a strength in aggregate ratings, though some recent guests report housekeeping lapses.

• Service: Restaurant staff attract praise; front-desk problem-solving and room requests are less consistent.

• Amenities: Multiple pools, Splash Water World access, children's facilities, gym, spa and extensive dining.

• Fees and surprises: Elite Club-only areas and benefits require the corresponding room category; check inclusions before booking.
