Axel's take: 9.2/10

A strong luxury city base, with standout service and bathrooms that sacrifice privacy. a contemporary 5-star boutique hotel in central Porto, scored for what it is.

Wine & Books is a contemporary 5-star boutique hotel near Livraria Lello and Clérigos, and we'd shortlist it for a luxury Porto city break. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests consistently praise the warm, attentive staff, immaculate rooms, comfortable beds and generous breakfast. The rooftop bar adds city views, while the indoor pool, sauna and steam room make this more than somewhere to sleep between sightseeing stops.

The main reservation is room design rather than service. Several guests flag glass showers exposed to the bedroom and limited toilet privacy; Tripadvisor reviewers also mention skimpy clothes storage on longer stays. Ask about the exact bathroom layout before booking, especially when sharing with a friend. Parking costs extra, and returning from the riverfront means an uphill climb. It's strongest for couples who prioritize centrality, polished service and a proper spa.

  • Best for: couples on a luxury city break; sightseeing with spa downtime; travelers who value attentive service

  • Watch out for: limited bathroom privacy in some room categories; limited clothes storage for longer stays; uphill return from the riverfront

  • Location: Central, near Livraria Lello and Clérigos, with restaurants nearby; expect hills when exploring.

  • Rooms: Modern and comfortable, but check bathroom privacy and storage before choosing a category.

  • Cleanliness: Consistently strong recent feedback for both bedrooms and wellness facilities.

  • Service: Warm, proactive staff are the clearest recurring strength across guest-review sites.

  • Amenities: Heated indoor pool, sauna, steam room, gym, spa treatments, restaurant and rooftop bar.

  • Fees and surprises: Parking and airport transfers cost extra; Expedia also lists pet charges and a pet deposit.
