Axel's take: 8.8/10

A strong sightseeing base with standout staff, but choose your room carefully. a colorful 4-star boutique hotel opposite Porto Cathedral, scored for what it is.

Sé Catedral is a colorful 4-star boutique hotel opposite Porto Cathedral, rather than a conventional big Hilton. We'd pick it for a short sightseeing break: São Bento, the Dom Luís I Bridge and the old town are close, and recent Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff and cleanliness. Comfortable beds, playful interiors and a generally well-liked breakfast round out a very good city base.

The compromises are mostly room-specific. Several guests mention compact rooms and limited clothes storage; others find their upgraded rooms spacious. Noise from the street and ground-floor bar reaches some rooms, although plenty of guests report quiet nights. Ask for a room away from the bar if sleep matters more than a view. There's no hotel parking, and the uphill return from the riverfront deserves consideration. We'd skip it for a spacious, hushed retreat.

• Best for: first-time Porto visitors; couples on short city breaks; travelers exploring without a car

• Watch out for: street and bar noise in some rooms; compact rooms with limited storage; no hotel parking and uphill walks

• Location: Opposite the cathedral, close to São Bento and the bridge; expect hills.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and bold decor; size, outlook and storage vary by category.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall feedback across sites, including recent guests.

• Service: Helpful reception staff and thoughtful personal touches are recurring strengths.

• Amenities: Restaurant, lively bar, breakfast and free Wi-Fi; no on-site parking.

• Fees and surprises: City tax applies; check breakfast inclusion and confirm pet charges directly, as published policies differ.
