Axel's take: 8.4/10

A strong budget pick for clean rooms, comfortable beds and easy transit. a family-run budget motel in North Portland, scored for what it is.

Viking is a family-run budget motel that gets the important things right. Booking.com, Expedia and Tripadvisor guests consistently praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and friendly, helpful staff, including in recent reviews. We'd pick it for a practical Portland stay rather than a hotel experience: free parking, in-room fridges and microwaves, nearby groceries and food trucks, and the MAX Yellow Line close by make it good value.

The trade-off is an older, straightforward property with basic furnishings and limited amenities. Some recent guests report weak Wi-Fi, although Booking.com's overall Wi-Fi rating is strong, so we'd confirm connectivity before relying on it for work. This is a North Portland neighborhood base, not a downtown doorstep. Skip it if you want polished interiors, extensive facilities or central sights within walking distance.

• Best for: budget-conscious couples and solo travelers; drivers wanting free parking; visitors comfortable using light rail

• Watch out for: older rooms and basic furnishings; some recent reports of weak Wi-Fi; outside downtown

• Location: Near the MAX Yellow Line, with groceries, cafes and food trucks within walking distance.

• Rooms: Simple, older rooms with comfortable beds, air conditioning, fridges and microwaves.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com, Expedia and Tripadvisor guest feedback.

• Service: Guests repeatedly describe friendly, helpful owners and staff.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, coin-operated laundry, a covered patio and bike storage.

• Fees and surprises: Parking is free; laundry is coin-operated.
